According to EarthTimes, Motorola, Inc.  announced today that its Home & Networks Mobility business has been selected by Imagine to design and deploy an end-to-end WiMAX network to replace Imagine’s existing wireless infrastructure nationwide.

Imagine will use Motorola’s end-to-end WiMAX solution to deliver voice and high speed data services to residential and small to medium-sized enterprise customers. They will also be offering mobility in city centers, using USB dongles. The solution will also enable Imagine to deliver a wholesale voice and data broadband service to other internet service providers. Motorola will provide deployment, integration and support services to Imagine in addition to WiMAX equipment.

Sean Bolger, CEO, Imagine Communication Group said “customers across Ireland will soon experience a leap forward in terms of broadband access and speeds. Motorola’s globally renowned WiMAX solutions are quick to deploy, flexible and scalable and allow us to meet increasing demand for next-generation voice and broadband data services at home, at work and on the move.”

Motorola’s market-leading WiMAX infrastructure, which will operate in the 3.5 GHz spectrum band, will enable Imagine to reach a wider subscriber base, including rural areas, as well as helping meet the growing demand for broadband and other IP-based services,  in a cost-effective manner. Customer experience will be enhanced by Motorola’s NBBS remote device management software platform. The software platform will enable Imagine to remotely access, configure, and troubleshoot their full portfolio of WiMAX devices to ensure high quality of service levels, while lowering operational costs, accelerating new service introduction, increasing revenue, and improving customer care.

“Today’s announcement further solidifies Motorola’s global WiMAX leadership position and we are delighted to be partnering with Imagine on this major project, bringing WiMAX to yet another country. Operators such as Imagine are selecting WiMAX solutions to offer customers cost-effective and high-quality mobile broadband connections in regions not yet fully served by a fixed broadband infrastructure,” said Steve McCaffery, vice president, European sales, Motorola Home & Networks Mobility.… Read the rest

Malaga

Clearwire has picked Alvarion and ZTE as network infrastructure suppliers for Clearwire’s planned launch of WiMax services in Spain in 2010, as reported Nicola Leske (Reuters)

WiMax has been competing for the status of next-generation mobile technology with Long Term Evolution (LTE), which has become mobile operators’ favoured solution as it can exploit existing infrastructure.

Clearwire President Barry West, however, said that “WiMax is past the tipping point” and was here to stay. Clearwire plans to offer 4G services in selected Spanish urban areas during 2010. Services will include high-speed internet, VoIP, and video to consumers and businesses.

Alvarion will supply network equipment in the city of Malaga and will provide its 4Motion mobile WiMAX solution, that incorporates the WiMAX Forum® Certified™ BreezeMAX® platform for the 3.5 GHz frequency band. BreezeMAX is designed to optimize network efficiency and enable superior coverage. The network will be built using an all-IP, open WiMAX architecture to allow Clearwire to leverage its global ecosystem of best of breed partners and solutions.

Alvarion did not disclose the size of the deal, which is believed to be small.

Leader Capital Markets analyst Eran Jacoby said, “If the largest WiMAX venture in the world today is Clearwire’s project in the US, then it’s a good thing to hook up with its subsidiary in Europe. The main question that arises from this contract is whether it will open doors for Alvarion to participate in Clearwire’s big project in the US.”

Alvarion CEO Tzvika Friedman said, “As we become part of the Clearwire ecosystem, we look forward to supporting Clearwire in accelerating innovation and ultimately redefining the value of the mobile Internet. We also hope to leverage this partnership with future Clearwire service provider partners.”

ZTE will provide its services in the city of Seville, West said at a telecoms industry event in Geneva on Tuesday.

Industry association WiMax Forum has said that WiMax service providers will offer networks covering 800 million people by the end of 2010.… Read the rest
