Liberty Telecom is expected to launch a commercial WiMax network in the Philippines soon. It currently offers a free trial service to certain clients. It’s available in metro Manila, Mandaluyong, San Juan, Makati and Quezon City. They’ve reported faster wireless connections compared to a fixed wired line or 3G connectivity.

Liberty is relying on WiMax and broadband internet to bring the company back to profitability and it’s expected to account for 90 percent of their projected sales and subscriber base. There’s a lot of competition in the Philippines for WiMax customers. San Miguel Corp. and Qatar Telecom are financial backers for Liberty. Globe Telecom launched a WiMax network, and Rival Smart Communications owns some WiMax frequencies in the country.

Liberty will be offering cheaper subscription rates for WiMax services in order to sign up the public soon. Rates may be offered for as low as P250 a month. It also claims that because of WiMax, it will become on par with other telecommunications companies in the country.

Qtel planning to launch broadband services using the WiMax technology in the Philippines in the coming months. In a recent interview with CommsMEA, Dr Nasser Marafih, CEO, Qtel, described WiMAX as being an “important pillar” of the company’s strategy, and confirmed that Qtel was planning to launch services in the Philippines in the first few months of 2010 through its Wi-Tribe.

“Wi-Tribe already launched services in Jordan in 2008 and we also launched our operation in Pakistan a couple of months ago, and we are planning to launch services in the Philippines early next year. The reason for this is we believe WiMAX is the right technology to provide fixed broadband at this stage,” he said.

Marafih added that he sees a significant opportunity for fixed wireless services in Pakistan and the Philippines, which both have low broadband penetration rates and widely dispersed populations. One of Wi-Tribe’s rivals in Pakistan, Abu Dhabi Group’s Wateen Telecom, said recently that it had accelerated the rollout of its WiMAX infrastructure with the aim of doubling its customer premises equipment volume from 100,000 to 200,000 by the end of the year.

Saudi Arabian operator Mobily, said this week that it had extended its WiMAX coverage to more than 20 additional districts in Riyadh, including Mekal, Al Yamamah, Al Salam, west Uraijaa, and Al Rayyan.

Adam Internet, a  South Australian internet service provider has turned on its first WiMax tower.

The  first tower was installed at Reynella, SA. They marked their first launch by assisting their first customers – Mr and Mrs Ford, an elderly couple, who lived two kilometres away from the tower — to conduct a Skype video call with their children who lived interstate.

The WiMax network, which as of now has 6 customers connected  to it, is expected to reach 350 blackspots and around 55,000 people in Adelaide. It will eventually offer the city’s outer regions a 12 megabit download and 1 megabit upload wireless broadband service. Adam Internet had secured a $3 million tender in August to install the new network.

The rollout is expected to be completed by November of next year. Adam Internet’s chieftain Scott Hicks said there was already pent-up demand for the new service. “We already, today, on our broadband blackspot site have had 12,000 customers register. People have gone to the website and said they want service right now,” he said.

Adam is said to be building a team of contractors to cater for an installation schedule expected to reach around 80 to 100 customers per day.… Read the rest
