Just like  CES  last month, Cheetah will offer Clear’s WiMAX service during CTIA Wireless 2010 in Las Vegas. Rent WiMAX for as little as $13.99 per day or $34 for three days.

Attendees may rent a USB or desktop Modem or Clear Spot portable WiMAX/WiFi router, allowing a small  group of people to connect to Clear‘s super fast speeds. Check out Cheetah’s site to see exact prices for daily use. Many users tested the technology during CES and it’s expected to grow this time around. It’s a good promotional tool for Clear by getting the service out there instead of using a 3G network.… Read the rest

Tatung InfoComm, Ministry of Economic Affairs, will apply to establish an operator interoperability testing laboratory in Taiwan. It must submit the request to the WiMAX Forum.

Two laboratories are set up in Taiwan to certify products where the devices still must be sent to an OIOT lab for end-to-end interoperability testing before selling to WiMAX operators.

The only OIOT lab set up and approved by the WiMAX Forum was for Clearwire. Taiwan device makers account for 90 percent of the global CPE market, making $282.47 million worth of WiMAX CPE products in 2009. Shipping is expected to grow 86.8 percent in 2010. The OIOT will decrease expenses for device makers by decreasing shipping costs.

Reuters announced Rostelecom won 4G network licenses that cover a third of the population of Russia. The license is for the 30MHz of spectrum space in the 2.3GHz-2.4GHz band for each region.

The operator has 18 months to build and launch 4G networks using Russian equipment in each area. Networks will be launched in Tomsk and Chechnya. Svyazinvest, which is the state owned parent company of Rostelecom, wants to transform itself by combining its local telecom companies into one single network across Russia. The 4G auction makes the company the fourth largest mobile operator in Russia.

Yota has established itself as a leader in Russia in offering WiMAX services, a 4G technology that’s more readily available than LTE. LTE is still in the testing stages, but it’s a technology that Rostelcom can use when offering commercial services in Russia. Yota plans on a complete WiMAX network for Russia.

The Dutch government will hold an auction for the 2.6 GHz frequency spectrum in the Netherlands. Agentschap Telecom, a Dutch regulator, evaluated the bidder applications and chose 9 potential buyers.

The licenses are expected to bring three new service providers, offering WiMAX or LTE services in the Netherlands. The existing mobile operators KPN and T-Mobile Netherlands will be able to only purchase 20MHz. They hold spectrum space in the 900, 1800 and 2100 MHz bands. Licenses paired for 3G data use will be offered at 2×5 MHz, while 4G only services will be offered in blocks of 5 MHz.

25 blocks and 38 licenses will be available to European telecom companies looking to launch 4G internet services in the Netherlands.

Frost and Sullivan have awarded Agilent Technologies the Best Practices Award for World Market Share Leadership in LTE and WiMax test equipment. Market research determined that Agilent held the highest industry market share in 2008 with 20.2 percent of market revenues.

“While Agilent’s competitors are capable of addressing certain segments within WiMAX and LTE, the company’s product range spans the entire technology life cycle, from early R&D through manufacturing to network deployment and service assurance,” says Frost & Sullivan research analyst, Vijay Mathew. “Despite WiMAX and LTE being at different stages of their development life cycle, Agilent continues to work and partner with its customers with an equal focus on both technologies.”

Agilent’s LTE testing includes design simulation software with connected solutions for in-depth simulation with cross-domain test capabilities for digital to RF architectures, base station testing, realtime eNodeB testing, signal generation and analysis solutions for early module testing.

WiMax testing covers research and design, design verification and preconformance, conformance, manufacturing and service assurance for fixed and mobile WiMax, WiBro and support for Wave 2 and MIMO.

Sprint’s Business Markets Group expanded its 4G offerings during the fourth quarter of 2009. Sprint business customers profited from WiMax deployment in 27 markets covering 30 million people. The company also released the U301 dual-mode USB dongle and the 3G/4G Overdrive Mobile Hotspot during the last part of 2009. The U301 connects laptops and netbooks, creating a connection to the Sprint 4G network, along with Sprint’s 3G network. The Overdrive allows up to five Wi-Fi users to connect to WiMax networks.

“With first-to-market 4G capabilities, Sprint is enabling mobile broadband solutions for businesses today that weren’t possible before,” said Paget Alves, President – Sprint Business Markets Group. “4G is central to BMG’s Solutions Sales approach and a lynchpin to expanding our portfolio of applications, devices, and converged solutions that help business customers penetrate new markets, simplify and improve productivity.”

In other B2B news for Sprint, the company received the number one ranking for both voice service satisfaction and data service satisfaction by Yankee Group and Mobile Enterprise Magazine.

Sprint plans to deploy WiMax networks in Washington, D.C., Houston, Boston, San Francisco and New York by the end of 2010. It’s hoping that 4G and WiMax deployments will continue to help the company grow and prosper. Many of its top competition also chose the other 4G technology, LTE. Many companies are now releasing chipsets and other devices that are capable of being used on both LTE and WiMax networks.

Mobile World Congress is an opportunity to bring together manufacturers, mobile operators, software companies, and wireless industry experts from across the globe to showcase new devices and services while learning about the hottest new products and mobile trends.

Last year, MWC brought out new devices from most of the major players including Samsung, HTC, Sony Ericsson, and LG. Hot trends and products from 2009 included (and have continued to be) touchscreens, phones as the new ‘all-in-one’ device, the debut of Windows Mobile 6.5, a variety of new apps, 4G, and LTE. Taking place in Barcelona, Spain on February 15-18, Mobile World Congress 2010 is expected to bring on a flood of new products stemming from last years Congress while also bringing in some unique and first-in-their-class devices and apps.

A key player worth mentioning first is Microsoft. Though the company didn’t reveal much at the Consumer Electronics Show last month in Florida, more can be expected at MWC. A press conference will be held on Monday, February 15 hosted by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and companies and consumers alike have been speculating as to what will be unveiled. It can be expected that he will finally show off the result of all of Microsoft’s hard work with its Windows Mobile 7. Rumors have already been leaked involving user interface similar to the Zune HD, full Zune and XBox integration.

An onslaught of mobile devices is a definite as well. Samsung is expected to reveal its new Bada phones as well as introducing some developer tools and new hardware to host its new software and app store system. Though Samsung is entering the smartphone competition relatively late in the game, they are known for their attention to detail and it can be expected that they will pleasantly surprise those at MWC with some innovative features.

Androids, as always, have a huge presence at major technology conferences and there have been many recent rumors regarding new Android-enabled phones that will be hitting the market. LG and Motorola among other companies have promised Android releases and this year at MWC, it can be expected that many of these devices will pop up including the Dell Mini 3, the LG GT540, the Sony Ericsson Experia X10, and the Mobile Internet Device (MID) called the M1 from Inbrics.

Google CEO, Eric Schmidt, will be giving the keynote speech at MWC, hopefully inspiring … Read the rest
