MicroStar International will release their WiMAX-enabled laptops in India over the next few months. India, along with Taiwan, will be looked at as potential growth markets for the 4G technology.

MSI launched their latest netbooks at Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this past January. Many companies have interest in seeing the WiMAX market grow in India. Government officials in India announced its list of four companies for WiMAX roll out. BSNL announced that Teracom, Take Solutions, Adishwar India and Ampoules Auto are in the running for the Indian network.

The companies must be registered businesses in India for more than two years or be a WiMAX operator in a different country. Foreign operators must register a wholly-owned company in India before signing the agreement with BSNL.

BSNL’s initial plan was to offer services to rural areas of India, but it has started putting up networks in a few urban markets as well.

The National Communications Commission awarded Vee Telecom an operator’s license. Vee will offer WiMAX services in Kinmen and Taichung counties in Taiwan. Service is expected to start in April 2010.

Vee services cover 70 percent of the population in that area. The NCC will review an operating license from Fitel soon, as it’s the last of licensees to apply for operating status. Fitel contracted Motorola for a network roll out in northern Taiwan as well.

Taiwan telecoms embraced the possibility of WiMAX for mass use and the government accelerated the deployment process when they decided not to grant any more licenses for spectrum space. FarEasTone and Globe Telecom have begun offering commercial services.

A senior BSNL official hinted at plans to have at least 250,000 WiMAX users by the end of 2010. The unnamed official also shared that currently, BSNL only has 3,000 users in India. They started offering services in different parts of India in February.

The company began launching commercial services to Gujarat, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh in recent weeks. It also has 210 base stations spread across northern and eastern portions of India and plans on starting services in Kerala and Punjab.

A senior BSNL official has revealed that the company plans to have a user base of at least 250,000 WiMax customers by the end of 2010.
The company also set up 1,000 base stations in rural areas of the country.

Huawei is continuing expansion of its share in the Asia Pacific WiMax market alongside deployment of WiMax networks within the region.

The company allegedly signed a contract with KT Telecom for the supply of $182 million US dollars worth of WiMax equipment. In the past, KT generally made procurements from Samsung for its WiMax rollouts.

Huawei will also supply 700 WiMax base stations to India-based service provider BSNL and plans to complete its WiMax network before the end of March.

First International Telecom has chosen Motorola to deploy a WiMax network in northern Taiwan. Fitel and Motorola have teamed together in the past.

Fitel will offer commercial WiMax after the network in certified by the National Communications Commission in March. Motorola deployed base stations for Fitel in 2008. Motorola will now design, supply and deploy a comprehensive WiMax network that is fast to market and turnkey solution to meet the operators needs.

“The high-speed mobile data service is a fast growing market for operators. The new mobile broadband network based on WiMAX technology will enable FiTEL to offer services such as mobile digital entertainment and low-cost broadband access, fulfilling customers’ needs and creating new revenue streams,” said Ms. Min Yu Chang, chairwoman of FiTEL. “We are impressed by Motorola’s advanced WiMAX solutions and their dedicated and professional servicing team. They ensure a fast and smooth deployment of such a sophisticated network. High performance and reliable services are important to maintain a high level of customer satisfaction.”

Motorola has helped three of the six operators with WiMax licenses launch networks in Taiwan and is one of the fastest growing WiMax markets. FarEasTone and Global Mobile are two operators that have launched WiMax networks in the Asian country. Alvarion recently set up a Interoperability Testing Lab in Taiwan, allowing companies to send their products in country instead of outsourcing and thus, saving on shipping costs.

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. is now offering WiMax service in in the northern Indian state of Assam. The network services were launched at Chaygaon in the Kamrup district of Assam, providing rural areas with broadband speeds of 7 mbps.

WiMax allows for video conferencing, tele-medicine service and tele-education. The local government will be able to check meters, issues involving birth certificates, land records and online vehicle registrations. Fees in rural areas will be reasonable at only Rs.140 per month.

BSNL is also building a fiber optic cable network in the northeast part of India, including a 800km line in Assam to provide connectivity in the telecom sector. To increase the quality of the GSM network, BSNL will set up 843 mobile towers, delivering telephone and broadband services to the most remote parts of India.

Far EasTone launched its commercial WiMax network in Taichung, Taiwan. Equipment provider Motorola made the announcement. The telecom started a soft network in December 2009, providing the service on a limited trial. FET will also launch WiMax networks in Tainan and Kaohsiung in the southern part of Taiwan during the first three months of 2010.

“‘We are excited about the launch of the WiMAX service, which provides many possibilities to expand and tailor services for home and mobile users as well as business users and consumers,” Jan Nilsson, president of FET, said, “We are delighted to work with an experienced provider such as Motorola that has designed, supplied and deployed a high-performance and reliable network for FET.”

Those companies granted with WiMax licenses have begun to launch services rather quickly after the Government of Taiwan decided that they would grant no more licenses for WiMax services in the country.… Read the rest

Global Mobile will begin rolling out WiMax services in Taipei starting January 19. Global Mobile and other telecom companies in Taiwan are rushing to set up WiMax networks across the country because of the imposed deadline by the Taiwanese government.

The company signed contracts to start service at the Neihu Science Park in northern Taipei, with expansion to other areas of Taipei in the next few months. Complete coverage of Taipei should occur around the middle of the year.

Global Mobile launched its first WiMax network late last year in the Hsinchu Science Park and will announce service for the rest of Hsinchu City by the end of February. The company is offering a range of service plans, and if users sign up for two years, they are offered an all-you-can-use service with a free USB WiMax dongle with a monthly fee of NT$679 (US$21.36).

When licenses were granted to bidders, the government stipulated that WiMax networks must be open by March. Two of the other six companies have started up service in Taiwan and other license holders should have service up and running by March.

Far EasTone launched its WiMax network in Taichung City in December and Tatung InfoComm launched the first WiMax network in April 2009 on Penghu. Deployment of service has also begun in Kaohsiung and networks will be formally announced in Hualien, Penghu and Kaohsiung County very soon.

Vmax Telecom, Vee Telecom and Fitel however, still need to launch WiMax networks. Vmax has started signing up users throughout Taipei who will be able to access its WiMax network free-of-charge.

As part of M-Taiwan, the government promoted WiMax developement by offereing generous research grants and co-investment into companies. The government will continue to provide finance for WiMax applications and testing facilities to make the service more attractive. The government also hopes that by promoting the technology now, Taiwanese manufacturers will benefit from the global deployment of WiMax products.

The Indonesian telecommunication regulator, Badan Regulaasi Telekomuikasi Indonesia recently decided to use the 2.3 GHz and 3.3 GHz frequencies for WiMax. Service in Indonesia is planned to begin in November 2010.

Internux, Berca Hardayaperkasa, First Media, Telkom, Indosat Mega Media, Comtronics Systems Consortium dan Adiwarta Perdania, Jasnita Telekomindo, and Indonesian WiMax Consortium were the winning bidders in the frequency auction to begin offering WiMax services. WiMax is described as IEEE 802.16 Wireless Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) standard. The goal of WiMax introduction is to provide fixed wireless internet service to areas that cannot be penetrated by DSL and other wired internet service.

WiMax service in Indonesia will offer more opportunities for the Indonesian people, giving them the option of high speed internet access instead of current mobile internet service such as 3G and EVDO services.

WiMax service consists primarily of two parts, the base station and the WiMax receiver unit. Access to a base station is similar to using a Wi-Fi network, except that WiMax works in miles and not feet, therefore able to cover much larger distances.
