Flag-of-Trinidad-and-TobagoTelecommunications Services of Trinidad and Tobago announced it has launched a WiMax network Trinidad and Tobago. This comes ahead of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting next week.

“It contributes to making Trinidad and Tobago a more desirable place for investors and ensures local businesses, regardless of the size, have access to communications tools that give them the competitive edge,” Said TSTT CEO Jay Alvi

Sprint is a global leader in cellular communications.

Sprint  provides wireless internet services under the Xohm(R) brand, supported by an ecosystem of device, chip and other partners, including Intel, Motorola, Nokia and Samsung. The company has also selected Google to bring search, interactive communications and social networking tools through a new mobile portal to future WiMAX mobile Internet customers.

The Xohm brand has already been recognized as an industry leader in providing mobile internet to its users. Sprint paired with Amidocs, which supplied Sprint with software and services, to launch Xohm in 2007.

Sprint offers 4G network coverage in markets such as Philadelphia, Atlanta, Baltimore, Las Vegas and Dallas/Fort Worth Texas. Sprint continues to lead in WiMax coverage by offering 4G coverage. It recently paired with Comcast, Time Warner and Intel to help Clearwire fund and launch a WiMax initiative that will create a national WiMax coverage area.

SprintNextel-Clearwire-LogoClearwire announced recently that it has raised $2.8 billion dollars for a national launch of WiMax services. The company had previously announced that it to stakeholders that it had initially raised$1.85 billion in a bond offering to pay off debt of $1.4 billion. It also raised an additional $920 million in debt, bringing the company to its $2.8 billion total.

“Today, we are proud to have secured an additional $920 million in debt financing, which, when coupled with the $1.56 billion of recently announced equity financing and the $1.85 billion of debt financing that we closed on today, demonstrates our ability to access the capital markets on attractive terms and in sufficient size to meet our needs, while at the same time prudently balancing equity dilution with the cost of capital,” said Bill Morrow, CEO of Clearwire.

Sprint, Comcast, Intel, Time Warner, Brighthouse Networks, and others agreed to provide capital for the venture. The funds will be used to launch it networks in an additional markets, hoping to reach 120 million more people by the end of 2010. Brightpoint Inc. received a contract to provide an integrated supply chain management system for the next-generation (4G) WiMAX network. Yesterday, the company announced that it entered into an agreement with Time Warner Cable Inc.  to provide transportation management, inventory management, device customization, fulfillment, and reverse logistics for the Time Warner’s upcoming WiMAX ventures.

Time Warner launched WiMax networks in three North Carolina markets on December 1. Brightpoint will provide an easier supply chain solution to Time Warner Cable. It supports the launch of Road Runner Mobile including wireless data card, accessory and collateral fulfillment and returns, triage and repairs.

Brightpoint  enhanced its portfolio through more product offerings including full range of sales & distribution, logistics, and activation services. 2010-Winter-Olympics-Online-Video

Spectators and visitors to Vancouver during the 2010 Winter Olympics will have the opportunity to experience WiMax technology. Guests will be able to receive live scores, updates and real-time stats using their computers and other mobile devices. Craig Wireless Systems Ltd. is launching WiMax service throughout Vancouver in January.

Vancouver-area mobile users can use the WiMax link to watch the events anywhere. NBC will stream live coverage using Microsoft Silverlight. Using technology from Akamai and IStreamPlanet, NBC will be able to broadcast HD video online. There will be 23 video feeds, nine feeds set up from the venues, four broadcast feeds, six “Beauty Cams”, two victory ceremony feeds, one  feed of Olympic News Channel and one feed from the press conferences. The video will both be live and on-demand.

Motorola is supplying the 801.16e infrastructure for Vancouver. Around the venues and in downtown Vancouver, the company is launching mobile WiMax service. The other areas of Vancouver will be serviced with fixed WiMax.

Craig is launching WiMax is Palm Springs, CA and the Coachella Valley before launching Vancouver. The company is also launching service in 2010 to Manitoba, Canada, New Zealand and Athens, Greece. In all the other markets, the WiMax coverage will be fixed/nomadic service and is working towards the density needed for mobile WiMax. Craig is looking to expand, eventually covering all of British Columbia and expanding into other North American markets.

The company looked into technology 15 years ago by purchasing the broadcast spectrum and waiting for the technology to catch up. WiMax testing technology was first launched by the company in Palm Springs in January 2009. The company is also working with other WiMax providers like Clearwire to create roaming agreements.
