Sprint announced that it would begin selling services on a WiMax network in Chicago next month along with Comcast and Clearwire. Chicago was supposed to be one of the first places to offer WiMax, since they supported Sprint Nextel’s push for WiMax in 2007. However Sprint Nextel’s technical difficulties hindered Chicago from getting WiMax.
Sprint Nextel developed a new strategy and joined efforts with wireless broadband provider Clearwire, several cable operators and other companies. This group could provide the billions of dollars needed to build a national network and the appropriate amount of backhaul to wired networks.
Sprint Nextel, Comcast and Clearwire will be launching services in Philadelphia over the next several weeks. In November Clearwire and Sprint will be offering services in some parts of North Carolina and Texas. In early December their services will also be offered in Hawaii and in the Seattle/Tacoma area. Clearwire’s planned WiMax deployments are expected to be the world’s largest.
