wimax-chipset-apacewaveTaiwan’s Foxconn Group takes stake in Silicon Valley-based ApaceWave Technologies, local press reports, while Taiwan-based network equipment maker Gemtek Technology and Singapore-based Creative Technology have both decided to adopt 65nm WiMAX chips from  ApaceWave.

Taiwan’s Foxconn Group has invested in WiMAX chip designer ApaceWave Technologies Inc., the Commercial Times reported Wednesday. ApaceWave Technologies was set up by Gwong-Yih Lee, chairman of CyberTAN Technology Inc., a unit of Foxconn Group, the report said. ApaceWave’s other major shareholders include Venrock, a venture-capital firm set up by the Rockefeller family. ApaceWave was founded in 2005 and is headquartered in Fremont, California.

Taiwan-based network equipment maker Gemtek Technology and Singapore-based Creative Technology have both decided to adopt 65nm WiMAX chips from Silicon Valley-based ApaceWave Technologies for their WiMAX CPE products, according to ApaceWave CEO Gwong-Yih Lee. ApaceWave’s mobile WiMAX Wave 2 baseband SoC (system-on chip) solution, the APW2050, has entered design-in at the two companies, Lee indicated. The high performance, low-power APW 2050 SoC supports all 802.16e mobile WiMAX Wave features, including MIMO Matrix A and B and beam forming. It requires a minimum of external components to create WiMAX modems for devices such as CPE, PC cards, USB dongles and portable handheld devices, according to company data. ApaceWave is currently conducting interoperability testing for the APW2050 with a number of WiMAX equipment suppliers and telecom service providers, with an aim to push the SoC into volume production by the end of 2009, Lee stated. The WiMAX market is expected to experience a major takeoff during the 2009-2010 period, Lee asserted.

alvarion-smart-gridLast week in an interview with Earth2Tech, Ashish Sharma, vice president of corporate market development for WiMax Equipment provider Alvarion, told them that the company has done a couple of smart meter pilot projects using Alvarion’s WiMAX equipment to collect energy data. Giant companies like GE and Intel are already involved in the smart grid market along with start ups like Grid Net. Ray Bell, the entrepreneur, former Cisco networking executive is the founder of Grid Net. Bell’s smart grid are able to monitor energy usage remotely and communicate wirelessly using wimax with both the utility and the end user. One major advantage of using WiMax is that the technology is based on open standard.

In those pilots, Alvarion’s WiMAX gear was used to collect data from the smart meters and connect it to a utility back office (called backhaul). Alvarion wouldn’t disclose the partners involved in the pilots, but spokeswoman Christine Buzzetta told us that the company hoped to disclose those partners in the next few months. Alvarion has also been working on WiMAX-based smart-grid devices that can help a utility regulate power and stop a power supply in the event of an emergency, said Sharma to Earth2Tech.

The WiMAX market is expected to generate up to $15 billion revenues by 2014 globally from WiMAX 802.16e broadband subscribers. US WiMax service provider Clearwire is expected to expand this summer in Las Vegas and Chicago with Philadelphia and Dallas/Fort Wort.  The company which is 51% owned by Sprint Nextel, said it will launch its mobile WiMax service in Atlanta next month.
