iburstiBurst has applied to ICASA to extend its 15MHz of WiMAX spectrum to 30MHz. Allocation of the extra spectrum in the 2.6MHz and 3.5MHz ranges will allow the company to increase download speeds and offer nomadic WiMAX services.

Nomadic WiMAX allows both businesses and individuals the freedom to roam within WiMAX network coverage while utilizing the same high-speed Internet access as they do at their office or home.

jannie-van-zyl“But provided we are able to secure additional frequency spectrum from ICASA, we will be able to make this technology even more accessible by activating the nomadic version of the WiMax standard across our network. The network is ready, we are ready. Now we just need the spectrum,” said iBurst CEO Jannie Van Zyl.

Later in 2009, iBurst will provide connectivity between their WiMAX network and Intel’s WiMAX-enabled devices. However to put this plan into action, iBurst needs the additional 15MHz of spectrum.

“Accessing the spectrum we need to roll out nomadic WiMAX is essential if we are to maximise the potential of this technology,” adds Van Zyl.

With over 200 base stations in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town, iBurst has the largest commercial WiMAX network in South Africa.… Read the rest

infonetics-researchInfonetics Research, a market research firm, tracked targeted regions and countries that have strong potential for mobile (802.16e) and fixed line (802.16d) WiMAX markets and compiled their findings into the WiMAX Equipment and Subscribers in Key Markets report.

The markets highlighted include the U.S., Central and Eastern Europe, Russia, the Middle East, Africa, China, India, Japan, South Korea, and Brazil. These markets either have huge populations or existing technologies do not meet the broadband demands of the population.

richard-webb“India, because of its scale, and the U.S., because of Clearwire’s profile, are the two most prominent markets for WiMAX, and both are absolutely critical to its fortunes. Adoption levels and network performance in India and the U.S. will dictate how WiMAX is perceived in a global context, and thus how prominent a position 802.16e takes in the overall wireless landscape in the next decade,” said Richard Webb, directing analyst for WiMAX at Infonetics Research.

India is the largest single-country WiMAX opportunity in the world with companies like BSNL, Tata and Bharti Airtel.

In the United States, Clearwire and an increase in small-town and rural deployments by other operators, many benefiting from rural broadband stimulus funding

Russia is the perfect location for WiMAX with its geography, dispersed population and need for broadband and voice services. There are over 10 WiMAX networks in operation or deployment in the nation.

With the preditction of WiMAX subscribers in Brazil to increase from 184,000 in 2008 to 8 million in 2013, WiMAX is slated to become the country’s primary broadband network.

WiMAX deployments are underway in Central and Eastern Europe.

Demand for broadband and voice services in Africa has resulted in deployment of over 80 networks in over 35 countries.

There is potential for WiMAX in the Middle East due to the region’s inferior telecommunications infrastructure.

Although not very active now, China‘s WiMAX market could see significant growth if its 3G technology fails.

Japan‘s adoption of mobile WiMAX is increasing.

In South Korea, mobile WiMAX is growing, and there’s talk of a convergence of WiMAX and LTE in the future.… Read the rest

time-warner-cableToday Time Warner Cable announced that it will begin offering mobile WiMAX service in four markets. The launch will begin this fall in Dallas, TX and Charlotte, NC.

Time Warner, a Clearwire investor, plans to resell Clearwire’s WiMAX network as part of a broadband bundle. With this deal Time Warner will follow in the footsteps of fellow cable provider and Clearwire investor/reseller, Comcast, who launched WiMAX in Portland, OR and Atlanta, GA this year.

glenn-britt“You will hear a lot more about this as we build up to the launch this fall,” said Time Warner CEO Glenn Britt during a conference call this morning.

wimax_broadband_services_to_generate_15bn_dollars

Juniper Research released a new report that predicts an optimistic future for the WiMAX industry. The 65-page report, titled Markets, Opportunities & Forecasts, 2009-2014, shows that WiMAX 802.16e broadband subscribers will reach 50 million globally by 2014.

The report enumerates several key factors that will spur on the WiMAX growth, most notable of which is the vast amount of underserved regions around the world.  In areas where broadband access is either slow or entirely unavailable, WiMAX is the cheapest and easiest solution for an Internet upgrade.

Though WiMAX has been through some tough times during its development, such as delayed spectrum auctions and slow subscriber growth, the report finds that opportunities for positive growth still exist.

howard-wilcox-juniper“WiMAX 16e will have opportunities not just in developing countries but also areas of developed countries where DSL coverage is weak or non-existent,” said Howard Wilcox, author of the report.  “The key for the industry ecosystem now is to overcome the challenges and ensure trials evolve into commercial services quickly.”

As proof to Wilcox’s statement, network operators have recently offered WiMAX service in highly urban areas as well as rural areas.  The report found that some network operators plan to target high-end business broadband and cable modem customers.  Not surprisingly though, the report found that the highest number of WiMAX subscribers will be in the Far East and China region, where the rural population is large.  Next in line will be the Africa and Middle East region, which will exceed Western Europe’s subscriber base by 15 percent in 2014.

The report also lists the main WiMAX applications that each region will offer, the amount of service revenue and ARPU each region will generate, and the trends, drivers and constraints affecting the development of the WiMAX market.

china-sarftChina’s State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) are to construct a number of WiMAX trial networks in August, reports the local Interfax news agency.

Only a couple of months ago though, SARFT was denying reports of a planned RMB 100 billion (US$14.5 billion) investment in building a WiMAX network in 30 cities. It was initially reported that SARFT was expected to set aside the 700MHz spectrum for urban wireless networks. Xiamen Mobile is currently cooperating with China Mobile to develop a wireless broadband network in Xiamen, while Nanjing and Hangzhou are already working on their WiMAX networks.

SARFT is an executive branch under the State Council of the People’s Republic of China. Its main task is the administration and supervision of state-owned enterprises engaged in the television, radio, and film industries.
