WiMax Forum on Monday said that operators Clearwire International, Tatung InfoComm and VMAX demonstrated for the first time mobile WiMax global roaming.
The demonstration was done at the WiMax Forum Member Conference in Taipei. Using a USB modem, a username and password provided by Clearwire they were able to gain access to both Tatung InfoComm’s and VMAX’s respective WiMax networks in Taiwan. Each of the operators were able to talk to each other via Aicent, a third-party roaming exchange provider.
The demonstration was an important step, said Richard Webb , directing analyst at Infonetics. “Roaming is key if WiMax is to become more than a national mobile broadband technology”. Since Clearwire is one of the few large operators pushing mobile WiMax they are expected to take the lead on international roaming.
Clearwire continues to roll out WiMax services in the U.S. Services go on sale next month in Chicago.
