Sprint Unveils HTC EVO 4G Advertising Campaign

Sprint will now bombard the general public with advertisements, spotlighting the HTC EVO 4G. It’s the first WiMAX-enabled phone available in the U.S. Sprint will launch an integrated marketing campaign aimed at everyone.

The campaign includes TV, print, online and direct-mail elements, positioning Sprint as the first nationwide carrier with a 4G phone. The 30 second and 60 second “First” TV advertisements showcase the evolution of technology; the wheel, train, rotary phone and the first dual mode 3G/4G phone. The campaign also invites users to announce their first tweet at 4G speed using the EVO 4G, the first 4G wedding vows streamed live or the initial photos of an eight-person 4G hot spot. Users will receive a virtual badge that validates the submission. Upload to Sprint’s official website or to some other social media platform.

“Sprint is leading the evolution to 4G and this campaign reinforces our 4G leadership position while highlighting what consumers can do with this incredible phone, whether it’s on 3G or 4G,”Bill Morgan, senior vice president of Corporate Marketing, Sprint, said, “There have been a number of notable ‘firsts’ in our country’s history and just like many of those innovations Sprint is reshaping how we live, work and play with HTC EVO 4G.”

Qik video chat service allows EVO users real-time sharing between mobile devices or from mobile-to-desktop. It’s a pre-loaded program that comes with the device. The device runs on the Google Android operating system. It also comes with two cameras- an 8.0 MP auto-focus camera with HD-capable video camcorder and forward-facing 1.3 MP camera. The voice and data capabilities in the 4G areas allows users to view a seating chart or browse a menu while reserving a table at a restaurant.

The campaign created by Goodbby, Silverstein & Partners builds on last year’s Sprint “Now Network” push. It means that Sprint’s mobile phones offer an experience closer to having a PC in your hand. The new ads pay tribute to Sprint’s impressive legacy of technology “firsts”; the first Public Data Network, first to offer commercial Internet access and its boundary-breaking push as the first to upgrade its nationwide 3G 1X upgrade.

The device is available at all Sprint stores, RadioShack and Best Buy. There are many plans and packages for the HTC EVO 4G. It works as a mobile hotspot that allows for up to eight WiFi enabled devices to connect to the 4G network. It’s the fastest connection for the iPad available. It turns all these devices into 4G devices. Sprint offers 4G service in 33 markets with plans on launching networks in Los Angeles, New York, Cleveland and Miami by the end of 2010. They hope to cover 120 million people by the end of this year.

It’s a great campaign to get the word about the device that should take some market share from the iPhone. The HTC EVO 4G should help Sprint gain ground on AT&T and Verizon Wireless. Sprint has a lot riding on WiMAX in the immediate future. The device might only be around for two or three years before it becomes obsolete. Sprint could switch to LTE in two or three years and then EVO 4G owners would have to get a new device that connects to the LTE network.
