The Daily Mirror has reported that Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) has received approval from the island’s board of investment for its plan to deploy a WiMax broadband network costing USD12.8 million. The rollout, to be carried out by the incumbent telco’s Sky Network subsidiary, will provide wireless broadband internet services using WiMax 802.16e technology, to areas including those that lack access to SLT’s ADSL fixed broadband network. Sky plans to provide coverage to the entire island in four implementation phases, commencing operations in March 2010 and launching in Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara Districts in the first phase. The venture expects to have a customer base of 11,000 WiMax users under phase one.
