T-Mobile USA is looking to expand its spectrum presence, according to Reuters. It can do this through joint ventures with other operators and cable companies. It’s looking into a possible partnership with Clearwire.
It’s exploring many options because T-Mobile is losing customers to the larger and smaller operators. The company sits fourth in the U.S. behind Verizon Wireless, AT&T and Sprint.
It’s unclear what a partnership with Clearwire would mean for WiMAX. Sprint owns a majority stake in Clearwire. 2010 presents an important year for Sprint because it’s counting on WiMAX to gain a lot of subscribers by launching networks in Houston, San Francisco and New York.
