Samsung Galaxy to Shake Hands with WiMax?

The rumor mill has been churning regarding Samsung's highly-anticipated new android Galaxy tablet over the last few months. You'd think they'd put most of those inquisitive babies to bed when they ratcheted up the ooh-ing and aah-ing last week in Berlin at the IFA electronics show, but once again secretive whispers are making the transition to deafening roars when it comes to breaking news on the product.

The Boy Genius Report has recently speculated on some issues that were left off the docket at the international event. A little birdie told the tech blog that Sprint will be readying the iPad competitor for a November introduction, though none of the networks have let out an official peep out about exclusive deals with Samsung.

The roll out on Sprint would seem to make perfect sense, as the device is also further rumored to be 3G/4G capable. A tablet device capable of streaming HD movies and showing off other multimedia facets enhanced by the Android OS, would put the carrier's burgeoning WiMax network on a grand stage– a sink or swim race against the market standard iPad and its tolerated carrier, AT&T.

If the tablet performs exceedingly well on a WiMax network it could validate Sprint's investment and leave Verizon and AT&T jockeying for 2nd position or alter the wireless strategy of the competitors altogether.

The move would also be good news for CLEAR, whose shared WiMax network (with Sprint/Nextel) will boast a cheaper price point than most other wireless carriers and can be used interchangeably with Sprint-ready devices.… Read the rest

More Reasons for Optimism in This Week's WiMAX News Is the global economic outlook getting you down? Does the business section of your local newspaper depress you? Fortunately, there’s hope, in the form of a quick Google search: there is plenty of news on WiMAX technology floating around the Internet this week, and most of it positive.

Synopsis On a Possible Clearwire-Sprint Reunion Our first item, from the Washington Business Journal, announces the final merger of Clearwire Corp. with Sprint’s WiMAX business, Xohm. If you’ve had your doubts about the ability of Sprint to pull off a successful WiMAX network, this news might boost your confidence. Clearwire comes to the table with $3.2 billion in investments from a group of heavy-hitters in media and telecommunications, including Google, Intel, Comcast, Bright House Networks, and Time Warner Cable. Though Sprint and Clearwire have both seen their stock prices decline further after the announcement of their merger, the final approval of the merger by Clearwire shareholders is a resounding vote of confidence in the long-term promise of WiMAX technology, bolstered by the significant investment of a consortium of industry giants. Google in particular has demonstrated a pattern of quietly rolling out products which offer the greatest convenience and value for the consumer, even when their development requires Google to expend more time, effort, and money behind the scenes. Though many analysts and commentators suspect that other 4G technologies will emerge as easier and cheaper options for companies to pursue, the support of Google and other industry leaders for the Clearwire/Sprint venture sends a message of belief in WiMAX as a strong business venture, worth pursuing with billions of dollars in investments even in the midst of a turbulent financial climate.

More recently, Airspan has offered up another positive news item, announcing that it has successfully demonstrated a seamless handover from one frequency band to another on a mobile WiMAX network in the UK. Airspan’s demonstration of the ability of WiMAX devices to switch between frequency bands with no interruption in service will undoubtedly make WiMAX even more attractive – and affordable – for network operators, who will have the potential to build single networks of two or more frequency bands in order to expand coverage. Sprint Network Finally Retaliates Against AT&T’s Prosaic Claims

AT&T’s Apple iPhone and Sprint’s Instinct touch phone is not the only rivalry brewing between these two foremost cellular networks. AT&T has been bullying Sprint for a long time now, trying to prevent the Sprint and Clearwire union from merging both of their assets in order to create a nationwide broadband wireless network.

The only difference is that this time, Sprint is fighting back. Sprint recently filed a response, declaring that “The New Clearwire transaction presents an unparalleled opportunity to accelerate broadband deployment in the United States,” Sprint declared.

Furthermore Sprint has addressed AT&T’s false claims against the WiMax wireless network. They stated that only three parties objected to the Sprint and Clearwire transaction or anticipated conditions. According to Sprint, “Their claims lack merit and provide no basis for denying, delaying, or imposing conditions on the approval of the New Clearwire license transfers,” Sprint stated.

This 59-page document is full of proofs against the erroneous claims being brought by AT&T, in essence Sprint has put on their gloves and is fighting back to preserve their right to launch their powerful broadband wireless network.

Hundreds of religious and educational institutions have rallied behind Sprint and Clearwire, now Intel , Google, Comcast and Time Warner are not alone. They all realize the importance of a WiMax wireless network and the great opportunities that could arise as a result. According so Scott Sloat, a Sprint representative, “The transaction poses no competitive concerns, and the public interest strongly weighs in favor of quick Commission approval.”

It is interesting to note that as of now AT&T is one of the largest telecommunications company in the world. Hopefully, the commission will reject their unadorned complaints and see them for what they are; an attempt to distort the public’s view of a powerful broadband wireless network for their own ruthless self-interests.… Read the rest

Nortel Passes the Torch to Alvarion

The Canadian equipment manufacturer Nortel is passing on its WiMax operations to Alvarion in order to focus on LTE development, as reported on telecoms.com. Nortel claims the deal allows for both WiMax and LTE, which is projected to get to market faster than anticipated, to be developed on a timely schedule.

But there are other dynamics at play. The most immediate stimulus for the switch may be due to the Clearwire-Sprint deal still fresh in everyone’s minds; such a coalition in support of WiMax technologies has got AT&T and Verizon scrambling to polish the rival technology they’re backing, LTE. Once shipped, LTE hardware will be able to deliver floods of streaming media to mobile users, in as-of-yet unheard of quantities. Is it any surprise that Nortel is eying this development anxiously? In Nortel CEO Mike Zafirovski‘s own words, it’ll put “lots of pressure on the bandwidth of the networks” (TheStar.com). Thus they have prioritized, allowing Alvarion to handle WiMax while they lavish the LTE front with the attention it needs.

Smart move ? It seems so. Nortel’s stock consequently jumped 13% following the announcement. But don’t interpret that as a clear indication of market confidence in LTE–the battle lines are still being drawn on the 4G frontier.… Read the rest

Clearwire-Sprint Deal: Why the Who’s Who are Investing in WiMAX

While the business world has been buzzing about the Microsoft-Yahoo talks, the big news for WiMAX fans is the Sprint and Clearwire deal. More details on the financial and commercial agreements are provided in this article.

Sprint and Intel both already had much invested in the success of WiMAX technology but the reasoning behind the cable companies and Google’s involvement is being questioned by some.

So why are these companies investing in WiMAX technology?

Comcast and Time Warner have been feeling the pressure from Verizon and AT&T who have been forcing their way into the television industry by providing video through your phone line. Verizon is attempting to lay fiber all the way to the home, or close to it. AT&T is laying fiber to the ‘node’ and relying on current wires to carry video signals to consumers’ homes. By helping the growth of WiMAX, Comcast and Time Warner would be funding an alternative wireless offering. Having a hand in mobile broadband technology could also help the cable companies compete in the ongoing battle for our living rooms. The triple play (phone, internet, and television) offering is no longer enough. CE, PC, console game, networking equipment, phone, and cable companies are trying to take over home media not only because of the huge potential to sell a complete ecosystem of products, services, and content but also for fear of being shut out.

Google is rumored to have been reluctant to enter the deal particularly because the WiMAX offered by Clearwire is currently just fixed wireless broadband. The company had to promise a future in building a mobile wireless solution for Time Warner, Comcast, and Google to put up the money. Obviously bringing broadband internet to mobile devices would mean more time spent on the internet and possibly more time spent on Google, Gmail, or YouTube. But mobile broadband also means more mobile devices which would, hopefully for Google, operate on the Android operating system that was launched by Google back in November 2007.

It will be interesting to see where this deal takes us.

Synopsis On a Possible Clearwire-Sprint Reunion

Unstrung has provided a hopeful article on Clearwire and Sprint’s possible reunion on the WiMAX front–apparently with help from Google and others. Analyst Eric Kainer provides a synopsis on some of the possibilities:

- When could the deal be announced? The Mobile World Congress in Barcelona is one possibility. It takes place next week.
- Clearwire is “close to the finish line” in the deal with Sprint
- Google’s interest in Xohm may be because they feel they can reach more people sooner than via 700 MHz broadband.
- With Sprint’s financial troubles in the news and Clearwire in need of more funding, this may be the optimal time for a reunion

Let’s hope these plans come to fruition in the coming weeks, as postulated. This would be nothing but good news for WiMAX in the US.… Read the rest

Sprint Reveals the Partnerships That Are Making Xohm Possible

As rumblings in the news reveal, Sprint just announced that WiMAX is coming soon– as early as April of this year, according to some sources. This news is a good boost to overall WiMAX morale, given that naysayers have spoken negatively of the rollout since the Clearwire and Sprint fallout late last year.

Just as interesting as the rollout are some of the partnerships that are making it possible. We can see that these partnerships span the globe and are taking into account all facets of Xohm as a true contender in the wireless market. Mobile Tech News reports on just some of these.
