Clearwire announced a major step toward application development for 4G with plans for a “WiMAX Innovation Network” in Silicon Valley, CA. with long-time partners Google, Intel and Cisco Systems Inc.

ben-wolff-clearwireBen Wolff, Clearwire cofounder and co-Chairman, unveiled the plan in the Apr 02, 2009 morning’s keynote at the CTIA Wireless show in Las Vegas. The WiMax network will cover the three companies’ campuses as part of its Southern Bay Area catchment region. “This is a 20 square-mile sandbox that is going to give people the ability to develop applications that we can’t even imagine yet”.

Clearwire is teaming up with Google, Cisco Systems and Intel to build this Wimax network for software developers to try out new applications on the fourth-generation mobile broadband technology. Service on the network is expected to be available by late summer of this year and will  enable selected developers to get access to WiMax and Mobile features such as GPS satellite positioning “in the real world”.  There was no discussion about any public access to the Silicon Valley network but Clearwire has planed expanding its ‘Clear’ WiMax service to the San Francisco Bay Area next year.

Besides, M. Wolff  provided some updates about WiMax devices. “There’s more than 30 laptop and notebook computers out there today and we expect that number to go up [...] More than a hundred devices will have an embedded WiMax chipset by the end of the year”. Wolff highlighted Clear Spot, the $139 “personal mobile hotspot”  manufactured by CradlePoint which will enables standard Wi-Fi products to connect to the Internet via the company’s mobile WiMAX service.

Clear WiMax deployment network plans is to cover more than 80 markets and 120 million people by the end of 2010. Still in tests on its Wimax Portland Network, “Clearwire found an average downstream data rate of 6.5Mb per second and at peak rates of 19Mbps in moving vehicles”, Wolff said in the keynote (Read also on this point the White Paper from Senza Fili “Testing WiMAX performance in the Clear network in Portland” and the interview of a Clear Wimax Subscriber in Portland).

In this context, Intel has been the biggest single vendor backing WiMax and plans to bring the new system into device chipsets alongside Wi-Fi. Google was a major investor too, in the creation of the new Clearwire in 2008, through the … Read the rest

Innovative and simple, the new personal hotspot router released by Clearwire Communications allows its customers to create their own personal wireless hotspots using Clearwire’s mobile WiMax network, which is currently running in Portland, Ore., with another eight cities scheduled for rollout in 2009 and at least another four deployments by 2010. With the capability of connecting up to eight wireless devices to the router, the battery-powered router will allow the ease and comfort of using a laptop, iPhone, BlackBerry devices, some Windows Mobile phones, the Android-powered G1 and the upcoming Palm Pre. The device was introduced during the CTIA 2009, held April 1 to 3 in Las Vegas.

Barry Davis of Clearwire demonstrates the Clear WiMAX wireless router

The $139 Clear Spot Personal Hot Spot router, manufactured by CradlePoint, offers any industry the capability of a fast and reliable wireless connectivity solution. With the added incentive of having WiMax services available for a potential network, the options for the router’s use are endless. For most businesses, the router would be an effective tool for setting up wireless networks beyond the office building at no extra cost. There may even be the possibility to set-up a hotspot inside an automobile, allowing busy business professionals constantly traveling to have access to important e-mails. The new hotspot router offers an effective alternative for wireless technologies. Instead of relying upon or even paying for Wi-Fi hot spots available at select venues, the new router eliminates this option, giving the customer ultimate control over when and where to create a network. Clearwire expects to introduce other Clear Spot products in the coming months.… Read the rest
