Juniper Research released a new report that predicts an optimistic future for the WiMAX industry. The 65-page report, titled Markets, Opportunities & Forecasts, 2009-2014, shows that WiMAX 802.16e broadband subscribers will reach 50 million globally by 2014.

The report enumerates several key factors that will spur on the WiMAX growth, most notable of which is the vast amount of underserved regions around the world.  In areas where broadband access is either slow or entirely unavailable, WiMAX is the cheapest and easiest solution for an Internet upgrade.

Though WiMAX has been through some tough times during its development, such as delayed spectrum auctions and slow subscriber growth, the report finds that opportunities for positive growth still exist.

howard-wilcox-juniper“WiMAX 16e will have opportunities not just in developing countries but also areas of developed countries where DSL coverage is weak or non-existent,” said Howard Wilcox, author of the report.  “The key for the industry ecosystem now is to overcome the challenges and ensure trials evolve into commercial services quickly.”

As proof to Wilcox’s statement, network operators have recently offered WiMAX service in highly urban areas as well as rural areas.  The report found that some network operators plan to target high-end business broadband and cable modem customers.  Not surprisingly though, the report found that the highest number of WiMAX subscribers will be in the Far East and China region, where the rural population is large.  Next in line will be the Africa and Middle East region, which will exceed Western Europe’s subscriber base by 15 percent in 2014.

The report also lists the main WiMAX applications that each region will offer, the amount of service revenue and ARPU each region will generate, and the trends, drivers and constraints affecting the development of the WiMAX market.

rural-americaQuantum Networks To Roll Out 3.65 GHz WiMax to Rural Operators Nation-Wide on the Heels of the Obama Broadband Technology Initiative. Quantum Networks, a turn-key WiMAX service provider, targets rural wireless operators by offering WiMAX services in the newly affordable 3.65GHz spectrum in the United States. Operators with shovel-ready WiMAX projects will be able to tap into the Obama Broadband Stimulus, to quickly and economically roll out WiMAX technology to their customer base.

Quantum Networks, LLC today announced its plan to roll out WiMAX solutions to rural Internet operators and service providers across the United States, utilizing the 3.65 GHz spectrum. The company is a leading WiMAX service supplier that focuses specifically on underserved regions. Quantum offers complete turnkey WiMAX solutions to rural areas in order to encourage the growth of WiMAX networks in the United States.

The newly available 3.65 GHz WiMAX spectrum allows for low-cost wireless deployments, and a low barrier of entry for network operators. Quantum enables its clients to obtain 3.65 GHz licenses and equipment easily, by adapting their business models to this newly available spectrum. The 3.65 GHz band will be one of the most popular frequencies in the U.S. for WiMAX deployments, as the licenses are practically free and are protected from interference. Entities must apply for the license with the FCC and pay a nominal fee. Once the license is granted, the licensee must register each site.

logo-quantum-networks“The emergence of the 3.65 spectrum by regulators has opened up a new industry allowing rural operators to build their WiMAX model around the new spectrum,” says Mr. Eytan Wiener, COO of Quantum Networks, LLC. “Quantum is filling a very serious need in the marketplace allowing itself to be the leading provider to rural operators for WiMAX equipment and value added services in an effort to assist these operators in deploying their networks quickly, efficiently and economically.”

WiMAX has a bright future in America. President Obama’s Recovery Act has allocated $7.2 billion to ensure that every area of America has access to the latest form of broadband Internet and promotes the development of next-generation wireless technologies. Additionally, the WiMAX industry is expected to generate revenues of $15 billion globally by 2014 according to a May 2009 report by Juniper Research. WiMAX stands to benefit from the fact that governments want to spend on stimulus measures now, with few other wireless broadband … Read the rest

wimax-revenueMobile WiMAX  networks are being rolled out more slowly than expected, meaning that service revenues will grow more slowly than forecast a year ago, a new study from Juniper Research concluded on 20th May 2009.

The WiMAX broadband report found that revenues from WiMAX 802.16e broadband subscribers will exceed $15 billion globally by 2014. WiMAX will provide an improved experience for broadband customers who are receiving low speed DSL or cable modem services, or at the limit of DSL coverage. However, WiMAX is faced by spectrum auction postponements in several countries, funding problems from the credit crunch, and slow network implementations, all combining to handicap network operators signing up subscribers.

Report author Howard Wilcox warned: “Whilst market leaders such as Clearwire are launching wimax services and expanding internationally, there are also well-publicised challenges for WiMAX such as those highlighted by French regulator ARCEP.  We’re on the cusp of make or break time for WiMAX.”

In addition, the report determined that the WiMAX ecosystem needs to deliver by translating trials into reliable, commercial services that attract customers.

Further findings include:

  • North America, Far East & China and Western Europe together will account for 70% of market by 2014
  • Mobile WiMAX has role to play in providing broadband in developing countries where there is no wired network
  • Africa and the Middle East, South America, the Indian Sub Continent and Eastern Europe will together be worth some $4bn by 2014

Asia's Role in WiMAX's GrowthAccording to Juniper Research, half of all mobile WiMAX subscribers will be located in Asia by the year 2013. This half will account for roughly 40 million subscribers concentrated mostly in Korea, Pakistan, Taiwan and Australia. The reason? It is believed that WiMAX’s growth will initially be spurred by areas where wired access was not a viable option. WiMAX’s ability to deploy quickly and efficiently in areas that were previously underserved will make it an attractive option for such countries and locales.

Top markets for 2013, according to the research, include the United States, Japan and South Korea. The caveats? Spectrum and devices. In order to reach a potential 80 million subscribers licenses must be acquired in a timely fashion. Furthermore, in order to utilize the WiMAX network, WiMAX-enabled devices will be an obvious necessity. Future projections on the success of WiMAX are hinged on these two elements. Therefore, as more spectrum is allocated and more devices are developed the likelihood of these future projections will continue to increase.… Read the rest
