Rumor has it that Sprint is talks with Clearwire, to acquire the struggling WiMAX company. Currently Sprint has a 54% stake in Clearwire and they could be looking to buy out the remaining shares.

Broadcom, a wireless chip manufacturer, was asked this week about the WiMax situation and its future. Guess what they answered? Yes, WiMax has been abandoned.

Last week Clearwire announced that they intend to adopt LTE in addition to their WiMAX network. With cash running low, some investors fear that Clearwire may default on their debts, as they are not generating enough money.

Nokia Siemens Networks announced that it will cut 1,500 jobs from Motorola Solutions, affecting R&D, supply chain and sales related to the WiMAX business.

Recently, Sequans Communications’ WiMAX chip has powered several HTC devices. The EVO 4G+, the HTC Flyer 4G tablet in Korea, and the HTC EVO 3D all contain Sequan WiMAX chips.

The Photon 4G from Motorolla is now available for those on the Sprint network. The Photon was made available for Sprint’s Premium customers on July 28 and was released to the public on July 31.
