Considered Sprint Nextel’s first true splash into Android technology, the HTC Evo Shift 4G is the latest new device to break into the 4G market, cutting in just ahead of Verizon’s first 4G Smartphone announcements.
Following in the footsteps of Sprint’s wildly successful Evo, the Evo Shift offers customers the full, techie-dream package, sporting all the bells and whistles we’ve come to know and love in our phones. Running a 2.2 version of Google’s Android system, the device has a slide out Qwerty keyboard – you can breathe now, oh touch-screen-wary masses – a 5 megapixel camera with 720 HD video recording, WiFi, and a 3.6-inch screen. Best of all? As befitting the multifunctional qualities of Sprint’s WiMAX devices that we’ve come to know and love, the phone is also able to share a 4G connection with up to eight WiFi devices, WiMAX data services easily added on to any contract for a paltry additional $10 per month. The Evo Shift will be officially launched on January 9, on sale for $149.99 (when purchased with a two-year contract) following a $100 mail-in rebate.
In addition to the Evo Shift, Sprint is planning to release a number of new WiMAX-friendly devices, in anticipation of the growing threat of 4G competition; aside from the spankin’ new cellphone, the carrier also announced the arrival of the new Novatel MiFi 3G/4G hotspot device, giving customers wireless service for up to five pieces of Wi-Fi tech; the hotspot will be available starting on February 27, selling for $49.99 (along with a 2-year contract and the completion of a $50 mail-in rebate).

About 3 weeks late on the breaking news front.
How is this Sprints first splash into Android? The Shift is just an Evo-lite for the kids to play with their big brother’s EVO. Not sure why HTC thought it was a good idea to call this an Evo; Keyboard = 1 step forward, size+weak processor = 2 steps back.
